Meet Kelly Crandell
Ars Musica is delighted to introduce Kelly Crandell as our new Music Director. Kelly’s love of people comes from having a large family; he is the 10th of 11 children! Kelly’s love of music also started at the age of 13 when he began taking piano lessons. That he became a musical conductor is no coincidence; conducting offers Kelly—and now Ars Musica—the best of both worlds, creating beautiful music while collaborating with people. Coming to Ars Musica by way of Arizona, Utah, the University of Michigan, 2 years in Belgium and 4 years in Copenhagan, Kelly earned an Orchestral Conducting degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
While you may think all the above is remarkable enough, Kelly is also an accomplished pianist, published composer, singer and teacher…and it doesn’t stop there! Kelly has a long and continuing professional relationship with four-time Grammy Award winning choral conductor Vance George with whom he has just debuted a new edition of Brahms’ Nänie. He is currently working on a chamber opera of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, while also gearing up for the Ars Musica’s 2012–2013 season. This, in addition to being on staff at Rutgers University and faculty of Montclair University—all of which gives him a busy and productive schedule.
When asked why he chose to direct Ars Musica, Kelly replied, “I quickly saw that Ars Musica is growing because it has a very solid structure or support and a vibrant community around it.”
He continued, stating of Ars Musica, “A successful organization is one that gives back as much as it is getting from its members, and that means that the members are getting a sense of fulfillment from participating and shaping the organization together.”
Kelly has already achieved this by working closely with choir members to design, re-write and debut our shiny new web site. Responsiveness, humor and enthusiasm have been the hallmarks of the process under his leadership of developing and launching our oh-so-important online presence. After an intense few days of a flurry of emails between and to choir members for input, Kelly announced “I want to express my deep thanks to everyone for their work. We’re close to the end, and the fruits of our collaborative labors are evident to see,” Kelly, we look forward to much, much more!
So check us out online, tell us what you think, and most important of all, come meet Kelly and celebrate the exciting new look and feel to our beloved Ars Musica!
